Notable figures in Greco-Roman history: Alexander the Great, who expanded the Greek Empire to its greatest extent in the ancient world, including into Egypt. Livia Drusilla was the wife of Augustus, adopted son and heir to Caesar, when he defeated the Roman traitor Mark Anthony and the Egyptian Cleopatra. Ptolemy I, who served as general under Alexander and took command of the empire after his death, was her ancestor!
Most men of the Ancient Roman Empire wore two types of garments and those usually were the tunica and the toga. The tunica was short with short sleeves, it was worn either as an undergarment or as a casual garment to be worn in the privacy of one’s own home and it was worn by men in every social class. The distinction were made when the upper classes wore tunicas made of fine white wool or luxurious linen while the lower classes wore tunicas made of any fabric they could find.
Permitted to be worn only by citizens of the Roman Empire and only during times of peace (sagum were worn during times of war), togas were made of fine wool to be worn as external garments. Emperor Augustus made the wearing of togas mandatory for all citizens outside their homes and to display distinct social status, they were decorated with set markings such as stripes or bandings. The different types of togas were known as: toga virilis, Toga praetexta, Toga pulla, Toga candida and toga picta.
Generally, togas were made of approximately 9 yards of white wool and tended to be quite uncomfortable and was ultimately replaced by a less cumbersome garments known as lacerna.
